The New Sydney Fish Markets

about this project

The new Sydney Fish Market

The new Sydney Fish Market, commissioned by Infrastructure NSW, representing a project budget of $750M, is set to become one of Sydney’s new waterfront icons. With what will undoubtably become a benchmark in design, it includes an expansive 30,000m2 roof of unique undulations representing “fish scales”. Setting new goals for design excellence, functional performance and environmental sustainability, the new Sydney Fish Market will be developed within an improved public domain including the creation of a waterfront promenade with improved access to Blackwattle Bay and linking to surrounding areas and public transport. The new Sydney Fish Market will be built to serve many purposes:

a working fish market, including a wholesale auction area, offices and commercial spaces

state of the art back-of-house plant and recycling/waste management facilities

culinary education (the Sydney Seafood School)

retail premises including food and beverage premises, back-of-house facilities, and car and delivery vehicle parking spaces

a cultural tourist destination, urban connector, and an inspiring icon along the Sydney Waterfront with a new foreshore promenade and commercial fishing fleet and domestic wharves

a working fish market, including a wholesale auction area, offices and commercial spaces

Project Engagement

Newman MEP Services was engaged by Watpac Construction to provide expertise in the tendering phase of the new Sydney Fish Markets. This included:

Review, assess and report on all tender documents for content, accuracy, and completeness of information

Identify and provide details of areas requiring rectification and options for further improvement

Provide options that ensure all sustainability objectives are met or exceeded

Appoint, direct, and manage specialist design consultants for the tender phase of the project

Provide solutions for: bulk ice creation, unique drainage requirements and reuse of water for washdown, air-conditioning a 15,000m2 commercial and retail space (including alternative renewable energy) and attaining a 5-star (or better) energy rating

Provide and direct a running dialogue on costs and options on a whole-of-life and whole-of-project basis

Supply responses, reports, sketches, and budget estimates suitable for issue

Undertake feasibility assessments of each and every discipline during design and ultimately tender responses from the trades

Provide recommendations on each trade regarding their prices, scope, and ability to complete the project

Results

Newman MEP Services’ involvement in this project directly resulted in a reduction of $M’s in Capital expenditure (a saving to the NSW taxpayer) and reduced operational expenditure for the end user (Sydney Fish Market Pty Ltd). Modifications to the tender designs across all mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, fire, civil, security, data acquisition and use, infrastructure, and sustainability, including specialist services and areas such as bulk ice creation (67 tonnes per day), fish auction facility, seafood cooking school, and authority connection and approvals. Additional strategies were also created for future-proofing the project, such as unique photovoltaic systems and hydrogen as possible alternative renewable energy sources. Newman MEP Services achieved this by strategically thinking about the “whole of life” of the project and its effects on the existing and proposed infrastructure, social and economic costs, and the clients’ and stakeholders’ goals and objectives.
